Overview /Welcome to Planning and Development

The Department of Planning and Development consists of the building division (staffed by a building official and building inspector/soil erosion inspector, code enforcement (staffed by a code enforcement officer), city planner (staffed by a part-time consultant), and permit clerk. The planning division serves as staff to the Jefferson-Talmo Planning Commission and the Jefferson Historic Preservation Commission in addition to the Jefferson City Council. Offices are located at street level in Jefferson City Hall, 147 Athens Street, Jefferson, GA 30549. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The department handles a wide variety of building and development-related applications. You may contact the department for any of the following: building permits, building inspections, certificates of occupancy, payment of development impact fees (parks and recreation – residential development only), code enforcement complaints, zoning information, filing of annexation, rezoning, conditional use, and variance applications, proposals for the subdivision of land (including lot combinations and boundary line adjustments), applications for a land disturbance permit and/or development permit, sign permits, certificate of appropriateness in Jefferson’s local historic districts, home occupation permits, and information about adopted plans including the city’s comprehensive plan and capital improvements element. Applications for business registration and renewals are handled by the Jefferson City Clerk, located at the lower level of Jefferson City Hall.
