JOB DESCRIPTION

Title:    SEWER DEPARTMENT SYSTEM OPERATOR

General Job Description:

This position is very varied in its daily requirements. This position will be required to perform system operation and maintenance duties associated with the Sewer Department as assigned.

The scope of work this position covers can include pump station maintenance and repair, waste water treatment facility repair and maintenance, sanitary sewer and force main repair and maintenance, and related tasks and similar assigned manual labor tasks.

Supervision Received:

• This position will report directly to the Sewer Superintendent.

Supervision Exercised:

• None

Illustrative Tasks:

• Perform routine repair and maintenance to sewer pump stations.
• Perform routine repair and maintenance at both of the city’s water reclamation facilities.
• Perform routine repair and maintenance to the sanitary sewer collection system and force main system.
• Operate grass cutting tractor and mowing attachment.
• Address customer questions regarding sewer service.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

• Able to operate heavy equipment
• Knowledge of the correct maintenance and operation of heavy on and off road equipment, as qualified and appropriate.
• Must be able to respond to written and verbal instructions.

Physical Demands:

• The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must lift light and heavy objects (in excess of 50lb), climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.
• The laborer must be available to respond to any and all out of regular work hours calls back to work (for example during storm events). This will usually be done on a predetermined rotation basis as established by the Sewer Superintendent.

Work Environment:

• The work is performed generally in the open air, adjacent to city streets, exposed sanitary sewers and the like. The work exposes the employee to noise, machinery with moving parts, hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as shoes, masks, goggles, or gloves, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be a high school graduate or possess a General Education Diploma.
• Possession of the Georgia State Sewer Collection System Operator’s License, or ability to obtain within six-months of employment.
• Able to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Possess or be able to obtain the State of Georgia Traffic Flagger’s Certification.
